  1. Cinco de Mayo: Celebrating the Traditions of Mexico by Diane Hoyt-Goldsmith is a picture book describing one of the key traditions of Mexico. This tradition is called Cinco de Mayo and it is a celebrated by the Mexican people every year in May. Cinco de Mayo translated in English means "fifth of May."
May 5th of 1862 was the first year that Cinco de Mayo was celebrated in the Mexican history. During this time, Mexico was failing to re-pay a debt they owned to France, England, and Spain because the country was bankrupt. On May 5, France invaded the small town of Puebla. After less that a day of battle, the Mexican army had won. Thus, Cinco de Mayo is the day that the Mexican army defeated the French in the small town of Puebla.
Today, Cinco de Mayo is celebrated in the United States by the many immigrants from Mexico. It is their way to celebrate and take pride in their Mexican culture. In the United States, there are about 33.1 million immigrants, and one third of these are from Mexico. These Mexican immigrant have brought diversity and many rich cultural practices to the States.
One of the cultural practices brought to the US from the Mexican immigrants are some very delicious foods. A "panaderia" is a store that sells sweet breads. "Tomatilos", "yucas", and "chiles" are all popular Mexican vegetables. Another cultural practice from Mexico is a musical style called "mariachi." Mariachi started back on the "haciendas"- old ranches- of Mexico where the farmers would come together with their harps, violins, and "vihuelas" to play music. Many children of Mexican immigrants today dance to mariachi music with a style of dance called "zapateado".
Mexican immigrants take their cultural practices and the children put to practice their "zapateado" dance lessons on May 5, when they gather to celebrate Cinco de Mayo. A typical Cinco de Mayo celebration starts with mariachi music and dancing. Lots of delicious food from the Spanish culture is made, and the people gather together and enjoy each others company.
Cinco de Mayo is an important celebration of the Mexican history. I chose this picture book on Cinco de Mayo because I wanted to learn more about this Mexican holiday that I had heard so much about. Cinco de Mayo reveals a lot about the Mexican culture and their common practices.
